I was so glad to read this piece by Joe Klein on the lately unfailing tendency of Senator John McCain to play to the lowest common denominator.

I'd been wondering, too, where the old McCain went… the guy who stood up to the Bushies, who slipped out of partyspeak now and then during his previous failed run for the presidency, who was willing to compromise on campaign reform and immigration.

Now, as Klein points out, he's spewing bile like the worst of the hate-mongerers, and it's just, well, sad — that this defiant display of out-of-touchness will be his final legacy. Read an excerpt from Klein's piece after the break:
