A decent-sized alligator was recently detained and relocated for trespassing at a Tampa Bay Publix.

According to the Pinellas Park Police Department, officers responded to a call Thursday evening after an alligator was spotted roaming down the sidewalk at the Publix grocery store at 4701 Park Blvd.

“We can only speculate that he was on his way to pick up a PubSub,” said the police department said in a Facebook post. An officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also responded to the call and helped relocate it to a nearby body of water.

“We’re happy to report both he and the shoppers are safe!” said the police department.

It’s unclear how the alligator ended up at this Publix, but it’s worth noting that Florida is now in the thick of gator mating season.  According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), alligator mating season typically runs from May to June, depending on temperatures.

So, it’s not uncommon to see large gators wandering around in unusual places looking for love.

There are roughly 1.3 million alligators in the state of Florida, says the FWC, and they can be found in all 67 counties.
