Mitch Perry Report 5.7.12 - You bet ya!

Gay Marriage, Floyd Mayweather, The Avengers rule and more …

It was quite a weekend, and I want to fess up in public to the bet I lost to a colleague regarding an event this past weekend.

No, it wasn't about who was going to win the Kentucky Derby. It wasn't about the Mayweather/Cotto fight, it wasn't even who would take the weekend series between the Rays and one of the two teams I grew up watching for decades, the Oakland A's.

No, it was about whether or not The Avengers would make more money than The Hunger Games in its opening weekend.

I'm not huge fans of either film, mind you. But I thought America wouldn't get taken in by the hype of the latest comic book extravaganza brought to the big screen.

I was wrong.

In fact, The Avengers made $200.3 million this weekend, the biggest of all time (of course, you ought to consider the fact that in 3D, ticket prices were higher than the Hunger Games). This was more than $40 million more than the previous record, set last year by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

(For the record I did see Monsieur Lazhar at the Tampa Theatre, and dug it!)

On to the news: Joe Biden made some yesterday, freelancing into the issue of same-sex marriage. His enthusiastic support on Meet The Press created a small problem for Barack Obama, however - that is, that hiswe administration officially still does not support the idea.

Appealing to independents, Marco Rubio was on another Sunday morning program yesterday, where he was pushing the Romney meme that President Obama has been "disappointing" in office because he's been less of a uniter than he promised four years ago.

And on Saturday, Hillsborough Democrats began the process of selecting delegates from their county who will ultimately represent them at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte this September.
