By the time you read this, it may already be too late to catch the Education Channel's Best of the Ninth Annual Independents Film Festival. The evening of screenings and awards takes place at Tampa Theatre on Sept. 19, but since this edition of Weekly Planet won't even hit the stands in many neighborhoods until the 19th, it's iffy whether this blurb will provide sufficient advance notice. Good on you if you do make it there, though, because it should be an interesting evening.
On the other hand, there's a follow-up event taking place on Sunday, Sept. 21, so those of you so inclined should have plenty of time to get your act together for that one. On Sept. 21, many of the award-winning indie and student filmmakers from the Tampa Theatre event will be on hand for a panel discussion on the perils and pleasures of filmmaking outside the Hollywood system. The event takes place at 10 a.m. at the Tampa Museum of Art, 600 N. Ashley Drive, and yours truly will be moderating (so feel free to bring an extra supply of rotten fruits and vegetables for the hurling). The panel discussion is open to the public and free with museum admission. Call 813-254-2253.
