Online rental website Apartment List just published their quarterly renter migration report, which sheds new light on how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting moving trends for renters, including those in Tampa.
The data, pulled from millions of user searches spanning July through September, shows where Americans are looking to make their next move.
In Tampa, 26.2% of apartment hunters living in Tampa are looking to move elsewhere. Miami is the most popular destination searched among these renters. At the same time, many renters are still looking to move to Tampa. 37.1% of those looking for a place to live in Tampa are searching from outside the Tampa metro area. The most common source of renters looking to move to Tampa are currently living in Orlando.
Tampa Bay is reportedly on track to become more rent-burdened than cities like Los Angeles. Research shows this burden falls disproportionately on people of color.
Nearly 40% of users searching on the platform in quarter three of the fiscal year were looking to move to a new city.
According to the report, Florida is the most popular state for New York City residents looking to move. 14% of the renters Apartment List aggregated from NYC are searching for places to live in Florida. So while some outlets report that the New York-to-Florida migration pattern is reversing, Apartment List’s data indicates that the Sunshine State retains its appeal.
