Aside from a darn good liberal arts education, Eckerd College offers the community a vast array of diversions, from festivals and art exhibits to free lectures and film screenings. This Friday night, two of the college's more popular weekly happenings — the Presidential Events Series and International Cinema Series — focus on a related topic: the environment.

Beginning at 6 p.m., Earth Policy Institute president Lester R. Brown speaks on environmentally sustainable development and shares key concepts he touches upon in his book, Plan B: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble (Raymond James Room, Fox Hall, Hough Center). At 8 p.m., attendees can enjoy a screening of The Great Warming, a three-part documentary that explores the science and consequence of climate change, and the actions we can take to preserve and sustain life without destroying the planet (Miller Auditorium).

Presidential Events Series and International Cinema Series, 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively, Oct. 14, Eckerd College, 4200 54th Ave. S., St. Petersburg. For a complete schedule of lectures and movie screenings, visit www.eckerd.edu.
