Presidential candidate Gloria La Riva will be in Tampa Sunday, Oct. 18, as a part of her national campaign tour for the 2020 presidential election.
La Riva, who is the candidate for the Party for Socialism and Liberation, will be at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park at 600 N. Ashley Dr. starting at 3 p.m.
So far, the third party candidate is on the ballot in 15 states this election, including Florida. In the 2016 election, she received more votes than any socialist candidate since 1976.
She describes herself as a labor, community, and anti-war activist. The main tenets of her platform include a mass reduction in the United States’ prison population, universal healthcare, women’s and LGBTQ rights, and freezes on rent and mortgages.
She’s also criticized President Donald Trump for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“People here and worldwide are facing unprecedented crises: economic collapse; COVID-19, environmental disaster, systemic racism and militarism,” La Riva said in a recent speech. “Tens of thousands of deaths by COVID-19 were preventable, but Trump lied to the people, refused to act, mocked public health experts and predicted COVID’s imminent disappearance six months ago.”
