Nashville-by-way-of-Sarasota singer/songwriter Tori Sparks channels Chrissy Hynde and Margo Timmins on her first release on her own label. Under This Yellow Sun is a sensuous blend of folk, blues and rock. From the noirish opener "Cold War," with its steel and mandolin pings, to the trumpet-meets-slide-guitar funk of "Caged Bird," Sparks proves herself a soulful songwriter and vocalist who at once manages both strength and vulnerability. An assured, auspicious disc that should bring the former local deserved national attention. 4 stars
