Florida has one of the highest rates of bicyclist-car incidents in the nation, and the car almost always comes out on top. St. Petersburg Bicycle Club's 2008 Share the Road Ride gives 'cyclists of all skill levels the chance to ride in solidarity against the lethal statistics and raise awareness that bicycle riders are everywhere. Seven local bicycle stores stage the Bicycle Bash by the Bay event that follows. Among the diversions are a bicycle rodeo, an old bike donation station, a swap meet of used bikes and gear, booths by local bike agencies about bicycle commuting and plenty else, demos on everything from putting together bikes to riding a unicycle, food, music and much more. Registration for the Share the Road Ride begins at 7 a.m. with the ride to depart from North Shore Park at 8 a.m.; the Bicycle Bash by the Bay follows at the park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sun., Oct. 19, 901 North Shore Drive N.E., St. Petersburg, 727-893-7345, free admission to both events.
