SPONTANEOUS HABIT
(Spontaneoushabit.com)
Following the slithering trip-hop of 2005's Sensual Side-Effects, lyricist/singer Shannon Fortner and bassist Allen Holsberg returned to the studio with a couple of new band members. The result is a decidedly groove-centered, organic affair, due in large part to keyboardist Jeremy Egglefield's acid-jazz riffs and drummer/percussionist Phil Anderson's tight rhythms. Tracks like "Giraffe," "Energy Shifter" and the slippery wah-wah funk of "Ef Pentatronix" mark upbeat departures for the Sarasota quartet, which still harks back to its down-tempo days ("Sea of Salt," "Slowly Drugged") without betraying a newfound — and more focused — soulfulness. 3.5 stars
