A quick look at the winners:

  • Dist. 1 — Incumbent Gwen Miller must face Joe Redner in a runoff. She got only 27 percent of the vote in a crowded field and is in trouble, even against Redner, who many would say can't win because of his ownership of the Mons Venus.
  • Dist. 2 — Mary Mulhern pulled the upset of the night in beating two-term Councilman Shawn Harrison, who was leaving his New Tampa seat to run citywide. She was outspent nearly 3-to-1 by Harrison.
  • Dist. 4 — Incumbent John Dingfelder beat challenger Julie Brown in a race that was expensive, partisan and featured a stealth attack by shadow political group.
  • Dist. 5 — Former Hillsborough County Commissioner Thomas Scott wins without a runoff.
  • Dist. 6 — No surprise as Charlie Miranda returns to the City Council.
  • Dist. 7 — Joseph Caetano is ahead but must go to the runoff against Frank Margarella in two weeks.
