The private home of one of the most prominent architectural figures of the 20th century is now on the market in Florida.
Located at 410 S 5th St., in Fernandina Beach, the home was built in 2017 and was the personal residence of famed architect Harry Bates, of Bates Masi + Architects.
The 1,024-square-foot home was made with rough cut Florida cypress and comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. It also features custom build-ins, reclaimed white oak floors, two screened-in porches, indoor-outdoor showers, and more.
During his career, which spanned more than 30 years, Bates helped redefine oceanfront living along New York’s coast, and was responsible for quite a few of the most iconic homes in the Hamptons and Fire Island Pines.
“His real achievement was sticking with modernist principles when, starting in the 1980s, shingle-covered McMansions became the default style in the Hamptons, ending an era in which architects like Richard Meier, Charles Gwathmey, Norman Jaffe, Andrew Geller and Mr. Bates himself had made the area a hotbed of modernism experimentation,” reads his obituary in the New York Times.
One of his more famous homes “Dual in the Sun,” a 1964 two box house designed for Jeannette Edris Rockefeller, whose late husband was Winthrop Rockefeller.
Bates also had a home on Fire Island Pines, but retired to Fernandina Beach until his death in 2022 at the age of 95.
The Bates home is currently asking $855,000 and the listing agent is Robin Rawls of Atlantic Properties International.
