Architect J. Bruce Spencer designed a number of significant homes and buildings all over Lakeland, and now one of his best and more notable projects is on the market.
Located at 1204 Rolling Woods Ln., the home was built in 1963 for the late dentist Sherrod Campbell III, and was featured a year later in an article titled “The Organic House,” in the Tampa Tribune.
The paper pointed to Spencer’s use of glass and light, which was innovative at the time and created a “unity with its surroundings.”
“Here is a home that relates directly to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, and is in the tradition known as ‘organic architecture,’ which means most simply that the house is an expression of the things of the earth.”
Spencer, who was heavily influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, was responsible for quite a few notable projects in the Lakeland area, including the United Methodist Temple, the Clark & Daughtrey building, and a handful of midcentury modern homes.
This particular one, nicknamed “The Glass House,” has been the subject of multiple remodels, one of which was highlighted in a 2008 article in the Lakeland Ledger.
“The Piekarskis [who were the owners at the time] found all sorts of gems hidden in the house. When they yanked down the dark wood in the living room, they found the original Ocala bricks underneath,” wrote the Ledger. “When they pulled up the wall-to-wall carpeting, they found the original terrazzo floors. The carpet nails left a few holes in the floor, but Tony, who’s an artist, just painted a terrazzo pattern over them. Now they aren’t noticeable.”
Today, the home comes with 4,105-square-feet of living space, and five bedrooms and three bathrooms. The L-shaped home also features original terrazzo flooring, a wood-burning fireplace, a two car garage, a pool and spa and more.
The home is currently asking $1,175,000, and the listing agent is Paige Wagner of Paige Wagner Homes Realty.
