Pinellas County has a new gay bar/club: Tru Lounge in Feather Sound. (It's on Ulmerton between Roosevelt and 275.) As a regular Georgie’s Alibi patron and occasional GaYbor visitor, I was excited to see how this new venue would stack up. Nothing may be able to compete with $3 mason jars and Natasha Richards, but I at least hoped to avoid seeing a bloody Ybor street brawl.
The grand opening party in July showed a lot of potential. This gay bar fulfills its traditional role of providing live entertainment in the form of drag performances, but Tru Lounge also threw a female hip-hop dance squad and a lounge singer into the mix, all part of its “Vegas-style show” on Saturday night. And it wouldn’t be a Vegas show without one truly horrifying drag queen. Here’s a tip for any performer: If you've got braces, maybe Lady Gaga’s “Teeth” isn’t your best song choice. Thankfully, the good outweighed the bad.
