The U.S. government is taking its first step toward regulating global warming when they announced the first ever greenhouse gas emissions standards for cars and light trucks yesterday.
These new rules, written by the Transportation Department and the Environmental Protection Agency, will now require all new vehicles — starting with model years 2012 through 2016 — to have a combined fuel economy average of 35.5 miles per gallon (250 grams of carbon dioxide per mile).
