This Friday, May 24, U.S. Representative Kathy Castor is scheduled to present a World War II veteran with overdue medals for his service.

Raymond Loring Chambers, a 93-year- old World War II veteran will be receiving the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with Two Bronze Stars appurtenances, the American Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.

A much-deserved decoration for his bravery and service.

Chambers served in the Navy and was a member of the 5th Marine Combat Division from 1943 to 1946. During his multiple deployments, he fought in what is considered the bloodiest fighting of WWII, the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Some of Chambers' battle wounds were discovered long after the war. Sixty years after fighting, the vet went to the hospital and the doctors discovered shrapnel lodged in his leg from so many decades ago.

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Chambers is one of fewer than 500,000 of the six million who served in WWII who are still alive.

In a recent announcement, U.S. Rep. Castor has expressed her commitment to paying tribute to the brave service of those from the Greatest Generation.

With Memorial Day just days after, Chambers’ wait for proper recognition has finally come to an end.
