First a new old Ybor City tunnel, and now this: Crews working on the highly anticipated Water Street development at the south end of downtown Tampa have uncovered human remains that might be nearly 200 years old.

According to a Bay News 9 story, folks in charge of the Water Street project confirmed that “a number of human remains” have been found. Authorities suspect that the remains date back to the time when the area was known as Fort Brooke, an army post established at the mouth of the Hillsborough River in 1824. There was a minor skirmish fought there in 1863 during the Civil War, but it’s unclear whether or not the recently discovered bodies are related to that engagement.

Archaeologists are on the scene recovering the remains, but the Water Street folks say the new revelation won’t hold up the $3 billion project.

(Unless, you know — restless spirits, cursed grounds, etc. We’ll have to see!)
