It's not all that unusual to spot a bare-chested woman at a rock or rap show. But it's certainly odd to witness one on stage, mic in hand, berating someone for lapping a part of her exposed breast.
"That muthafucka who sucked on my nipple, I'm gonna slap the shit out of you," says a dead-serious and topless Jwl B ("Jewel B"), one of the three women MCs from Tampa Bay known collectively as Yo Majesty. The incident took place last month at the Beauty Bar in Austin, Texas, during the venerable South By Southwest music conference. As of my deadline, the incident could be viewed on YouTube.
The voluptuous Jwl B. continued: "Bitch, you don't muthafuckin' touch my muthafuckin' body. I'll show my muthafuckin' titties 'cos I want to — not 'cos I'm a clown." And then comes the zinger: "[But] if [you] a muthafucking woman and wanna suck, you can."
Yo Majesty — which has been called "2 Live Crew as lesbians" — is blowing up clubs from here to London with their nasty-as-they-wanna-be banger "Kryptonite Pussy." In fact, that was the song they were performing when "a black dude with a Mohawk who was an artist on the lineup," according to Yo Majesty, came unhinged and apparently forgot that unsolicited boob-licking warrants a serious ass-beating. Or, you know, the filing of a police report.
"He wild out and got looser than a baby's tooth," Jwl B. explained in a phone interview. "He snuck through I guess and got on stage. I bend down and I start feeling this warm, wet sensation and I was like, 'hell no,' and was ready to mash that muthafucka.
"He looked up and saw my fist all balled," she continued. "He knew he fucked up and jumped from the stage into the crowd thinking they'd catch him. But they saw I was mad and were all about the girl power and he fell on the floor. He tried to play it off but I saw his body bounce."
Yo Majesty's Shunda K., Shon B. and Jwl B. finished their set at Beauty Bar, but the drama with "Mohawk man" was far from over. Jwl B. stomped into the VIP room backstage looking for him. He knew his hairdo would give him away so he tried to hide it under a hood. Jwl B. wasn't fooled, though. "I found him anyway and smacked him 'til his eyes got watery," she says. "I slapped him with all my soul and with all my might and if I see him again — I'll slap him again."
So, OK, the women of Yo Majesty are not to be messed with. But that doesn't mean that they're not into "wilding out," as Shunda K. puts it. At a recent show in Brooklyn, she recalls, they saw a scene to remember.
"We had four girls get butt-ass naked and they were shaking their monkeys," Shunda K. says. "I had to turn my back before I forget my verse. Gotta stay focused, you know?"
