A unique Florida home designed to withstand hurricane winds is now for sale in Polk County.

Located at 2907 Marion Way, in Haines City, this "pedestal home" was built in 1982 and comes with just two bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as 791-square-feet of living space.

Though pretty rare, the majority of the pedestal homes sold in Florida came in kits and were mostly built by the North Carolina-based company Topsider.

The company's pre-engineered mushroom-style homes were somewhat popular throughout the 1980s and early 90s, and can still be found in spots like the Caribbean, the Arctic Circle and even locally at the Treehouse Villas at Walt Disney World.

Built to withstand 160-mph winds, the home's high and dry octagonal design makes it an ideal setup for hurricane season.

"Our unique octagonal pedestal foundation and house geometry, together with our post and beam building system make these houses ideal for severely sloping terrain and for coastal building sites where homes must be elevated for protection against flooding and storm surge," reads the company's website.

In 2021, one of the company's chairmen, Joe Kruse, was selling his custom-built, Gulf Coast pedestal house in Hernando County.

This particular one comes fully-furnished with an asking price of $185,000. The listing agents are Ayme Delgado and Somarie Rolon of La Rosa Realty Prestige.
