A House Republican will take another run at making it harder to amend the Florida Constitution.

Rep. Rick Roth, R-West Palm Beach, filed a proposal (HJR 177) this week that would require two-thirds of voters to approve proposed constitutional amendments, up from the current 60 percent.

The proposal is filed for consideration during the 2022 legislative session, which will start in January. Roth also proposed the change during the 2021 session and got approval from two committees, but the full House did not take it up.

If the measure is passed by the Legislature, it would go on the November 2022 ballot because it would require voter approval.

Republican lawmakers have taken a series of steps to make it harder to amend the Constitution, including proposing a 2006 ballot measure that increased the threshold for passing amendments from a majority to 60 percent.
