Clearwater City Council plans to have a discussion about a temporary, 180-day moratorium on the use of electric scooters or the issuing of any permits pertaining to e-scooter hubs. In short, The city of Clearwater is going to have to wait for its turn on the electric scooter experiment that started in Tampa last month.
That’s according to TBBJ, which reported that Clearwater officials want to see how House Bill 453 — dealing with how counties or municipalities regulate micromobility devices — affects areas where e-scooters are already in play.
Council members started a committee last fall because e-scooter companies were already approaching the city, and council member Hoyt Hamilton wants to “let the dust settle” in Tampa — where there will be a total of 2,400 scooters between four companies — before Clearwater makes any decisions.
A vote on approving the moratorium will happen on June 5. Tampa’s e-scooter experiment is still in the first month of its one-year pilot program.
