A free favorite — The Florida Orchestra goes "Pop!"

While you might not normally go out of your way to see a "cover band," this is an exception. The Florida Orchestra plays a strong setlist of classic hits — or, more accurately, classical hits — at its free Pops in the Park weekend.

On Oct. 18 they're at Vinoy Park, 701 Bayshore Drive N.E., St. Petersburg. The next night it's River Tower Park, 401 East Bird St. in Tampa.

If you have to pick one, choose the Vinoy Park performance. It starts at 4 p.m. with a number of "opening acts," including a women's choir, children's chorus and a couple of jazz bands. They'll even have a "petting zoo," where children can touch and play orchestra instruments.

But the main act is the 75-piece orchestra performing pieces you know, and some you don't know you know. But when you hear it you'll recognize plenty of them, even if you're not a regular classical music-listener.
It's just like a regular concert, without the pricey ticket, expensive food and uncomfortable seating. Just bring a chair, a cooler and some friends. The orchestra performs at 7 p.m. both nights, so get there early enough to find a good spot.
