CL on the Road: Just another Monday night in Woodstock

The Chris Bergson Band has some serious pedigree. Lead guitarist and vocalist Chris Bergson has performed or recorded with, among others, Norah Jones, Levon Helm and John Hammond. Piano player Bruce Katz tours regularly with the Gregg Allman Band and saxophonist and vocalist Jay Collins has also worked with the Gregg Allman Band as well as the Levon Helm Band and The Allman Brothers. Rounding out the group are Matt Clohesy on bass and Tony Leone on drums.

As to the concert, well, let's just say they blew our socks off. After two hours of non stop, ass-kicking, get-up-and-dance rock, blues and soul, Lisa and I staggered out of theater exclaiming to whoever would listen that we were moving to Woodstock as soon as possible! The last person we saw as we made our exit whispered to us, "Just another Monday night in Woodstock."

When I first peaked into the Bearsville Theater I was struck by its warmth and intimacy but mostly I was in awe of black-and-white photographs lining the theater's walls by legendary rock n' roll photographer Elliott Landy. Located just a few minutes from downtown Woodstock, the Bearsville Theater is the labor of love of Albert Grossman, a folk music and rock manager whose clients included Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary, Janis Joplin, and The Band. After many years of planning the theater was opened in 1989 by Albert's widow, Sally Grossman.

My wife, Lisa, and I discovered the theater after dining next door at the Bearsville Cafe (best duck confit we've ever had). On the bill that night was The Chris Bergson Band.
