Last night's Colbert Report and his recent final spate of shows — one even featuring President Obama — offered all that we love about the belovedly ridiculous mock-conservative news pundit: rapid-fire wit, hilarious cut-to's, wild-eyed egomania and in-your-face ballsiness.
Since its premiere in October 2005, the Report has offered everything from impromptu musical duets with superstars like Paul McCartney to REM's Michael Stipe on a shelf to a memorable White House Press party speech indirectly mocking President Bush to a Star Wars Green Screen Challenge and many more surprises that were as entertaining as Colbert's spot-on send-ups of our dysfunctional news media and political landscape. The series deservedly won two Emmy Awards. (For a great Top 25 of Colbert Report's best moments, click here.)
Probably the best highlight of last night's episode was an on-point commentary about America claiming its place as the world's No. 1 oil-producing, "rich-ass mother-frackers" (see video below).
As many know, the final show, the Report's 1,442nd episode, will air tomorrow night, Dec. 18. The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, hosted by one of The Daily Show's erstwhile "senior African American correspondent" will premiere in its spot next month. No date has been set for Colbert to replace Letterman in 2015.
One last chant for Stephen! Stephen! Stephen! …. his "Truthiness" will be missed.
