On the Radar: Paper airplanes and urban two-wheel scavenging

Meet the record-holder for fastest paper airplane and ride in the Downtown Throwdown.

Tampa's self-styled "Finest Vintage Scooter Club," Tampa Two Stroke, invites all owners of two-wheelers (bicycles, mopeds, scooters, motorcycles and the like) to engage in some friendly competition during its Downtown Throwdown Scavenger Hunt, an event sponsored by PBR. Participants register teams of two or more, pair up with other singles, and pick up the wide-ranging list of items to be collected for the hunt starting at 10 a.m. at Cafe Hey (1540 N. Franklin Ave.); the official kick-off is 11 a.m., with a midday break at The Brick's (1327 E. Seventh Ave.) for lunch, general sizing up and note-comparing, and adult games and prize-winning activities. The downtown Tampa-Ybor City hunt concludes at 5 p.m. at Crowbar (1812 N. 17th St.), where items are turned in for points and the winners are announced and given the title of ultimate scavenger! (I don't know about that last part, but at least you'll secure the bragging rights for this particular event, if not others.) For complete rules and info, visit tampa2stroke.com. Sat., April 30, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., downtown Tampa and Ybor City, $5 per person entry fee. (Text by Leilani Polk)

Take the kids and spend a high-flying evening with paper-plane world record holder Ken Blackburn on Fri., April 29, at the Glazer Children's Museum. In 2008, the aeronautical engineer created a paper airplane that flew for 27.6 seconds. The flight took place in Atlanta's Georgia Dome, and the record has yet to be beaten. Hear the fascinating stories that made the engineer from McDonnell Douglas dedicate his life to the art of the paper airplane. Plus, dine on "wings," cole slaw, french "Flies" and soda "prop." From 6:15 to 8 p.m., Blackburn entertains with a lively interactive discussion about his passion for flight, share his winning paper airplane design and demonstrates it in action. In addition, you can create your own paper airplanes with cool new designs and enter a competition (every child will receive a prize just for participating). Blackburn will sign copies of his books after the event (available for purchase). Register by calling 813-443-3821 or e-mail [email protected] Dinner and Paper Airplane event costs $21 for adult members, $23 for adult non-members; $19 for children members, $21 for children non-members; event only is $10, $12 for adults; $8, $10 for children; glazermuseum.org.
