Because they can, can, can.

The “Moulin Rouge” movie and jukebox-musical style soundtrack racked up countless accolades after release in 2001, so it’s surprising how long it took the Baz Luhrmann-directed film to finally hit Broadway.

The stage adaptation—which first opened in 2019—is extravagant down to the last detail of its home at New York’s Al Hirschfeld Theater, but does not match up to the original 2001 film in terms of its soundtrack. While samples from Elton John, Madonna, and Labelle still play major parts in the show, a few tracks from the aughts and 2010s have since been thrown into the mix, including Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Lorde’s “Royals,” and Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).”

A sign language interpreter will be present for the evening show on Feb. 8, as well as the matinee on Feb. 17. Audio descriptions will also be available for the Feb. 10 matinee, and on Feb. 15.

Ewan McGregor, who portrayed Christian in the film (you're damn right Obi-Wan Kenobi can sing!) will be appearing at MegaCon Orlando this weekend, and he currently has no other convention appearances for the foreseeable future, so perhaps he’ll drive into downtown Tampa one night to take a break from talking and thinking about “Star Wars” with fans.
