After over a week of paid workshops by the waterfront, the Writers in Paradise Conference is back with its free readings at St. Petersburg’s Eckerd College.

Now celebrating becoming a drinking age adult, the 21st conference features 15 different authors, including Mexican-American “border” author Luís Alberto Urrea, bringing his creative writing class at the University of Illinois to a different, and warmer, podium.

His 2004, Pulitzer-nominated novel “The Devil’s Highway” focuses on a realistic portrayal of a Mexican family losing their track in the Arizona desert, bordering their home country.

The Evening Reading Series welcomes every type of reader from Jan. 18-25. Representing poetry, fiction, suspense and many other genres, authors include:

  • Didi Jackson
  • Major Jackson
  • Michael Koryta
  • Laura Lippman
