Longstanding Thai restaurant, Chiang Mai Tai, closed its doors for good at 1100 Central Ave. in St. Petersburg over the weekend. Halloween was its last day of service on the roundabout in the EDGE District.
The concept, which was next door from Enigma and caddy corner from Independent Bar, said goodbye to the foodie community after a decade of service with a simple note posted on its door.
The note reads “Sat. Oct. 31st is the last day… for us working here at Chiang Mai Tai. It has been a wonderful 10 years here. We want you to know how much we have enjoyed working with you and to thank our many customers. We are greatful for you and all your support these past 10 years.”
A Clearwater restaurant with the same name and different owner, however, is still open.
Chiang Mai is known for dishes like spicy Volcano Chicken, panang curry, as well as an array of pad thai.
It may be too soon, but we can’t help but wonder what will take over the coveted corner space on Central Avenue. Over the years, that section of Central continues to grow and flourish with heavy-hitters including Red Mesa Mercado, Bodega, Dr. BBQ, Hawkers and Ferg’s, not to mention forthcoming brunch joint Bacon Bitch and alongside its counterpart The Chicken Spot.
Until it is announced who is stepping up to take over the soon-to-be-vacant space, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for new eats to bless the ‘Burg.
