Since the arrival of COVID-19, and the fluctuating regulations for safe dining at Tampa Bay bars and restaurants, local establishments have been getting crafty to stay in businesses. That means amping up takeout and delivery options, launching ghost kitchens and working with the city to provide ample space for outdoor dining.

With the pandemic still very much present in the community, the city of Clearwater has decided to extend the closure of Cleveland St. to allow for socially distanced outdoor dining through mid-April.

The closure began in May 2020 and affects the 400 and 500 blocks of Cleveland Street. Some joints located on these blocks include brunch staple Clear Sky on Cleveland, as well as Downtown Pizza Sports Bar and Grill, Tequila's Mexican Grille & Cantina, and Roxy's Clearwater. According to a release from the city of Clearwater, the initiative has been so successful in generating business downtown that the city has opted to extend the closure through April 16.

By eliminating vehicular traffic, this space has allowed for open-air dining and entertainment for locals and tourists alike to flock back to the streets and support local businesses. Combine that with all the discounts folks can take advantage of by checking out a new "District Advantages" web app, and what you've got is a bunch more reasons to feel that sweet sea breeze come off the water and into the district.

"We remain committed to helping our restaurants provide a safe, outdoor dining experience downtown. New restaurants have opened, there is live music in the evenings and local merchants have recently launched a new discount program," said Clearwater Community Redevelopment Director Amanda Thompson in a statement. "The city, the CRA, the Downtown Development Board and the Downtown Clearwater Merchant's Association have worked together to create a safe and fun atmosphere whether you are dining in or ordering takeout."

The city encourages supporting downtown businesses while adhering to state, local, and CDC guidelines requiring wearing masks indoors, encouraging masks while outside, staying away from large gatherings, and maintaining six-foot physical distancing.
