Banyan Cafe and Catering, which has two locations in downtown St. Petersburg, has been dishing out coffee and light bites to early-risers and regulars for about a decade now. Earlier this week, a “closed” sign was permanently hung in the window of its cafe on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N.

However, the future of the MLK location is in good hands—perhaps the best hands—as Banyan Cafe founder and original owner Erica Allums will take over the coffee spot and eatery, once again.

In the summer of 2018, Allums sold both Banyan locations to Tampa Bay Caffeine Inc. to focus on the expansion of her catering business. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Allums is currently in the process of re-acquiring the space, and will most likely open another cafe concept in the old MLK location.

A projected opening date for Allums' soon-to-be cafe has yet to be determined.

Tampa Bay Caffeine Inc. founder Hernan Nova will continue to own and operate the Banyan Cafe location at 701 Central Ave. in St. Pete, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
