The last week of January arrived quickly, which is odd because I always feel like January just drags on and on. Maybe it was all new music that released this month? Yeah, I'm going with that. There are 15 new cuts to close out a very strong month waiting to be played. Do your ears a favor and tune in to the Tune-Up.
Indie-rock darlings Arcade Fire have resurfaced with a brand new track titled "I Give You Power." Their new song features gospel great Mavis Staples, an unconventional guest artist, but it works well. "I Give You Power" is one of many new protest songs about the current state of this country and most certainly won't be the last. I won't say any names, but I'm sure you can take a guess of who "I Gave You Power" is aimed at with lyrics like, "I give you power, but now I say. I give you power, I can take it away." Win and Mavis are singing the truth.
Maggie Rogers is quickly becoming an indie-pop star. Pharrell Williams hasn't been shy about his opinion of her being supremely talented and the internet appears to have the same stance. It all started with her breakthrough hit "Alaska," which was one of my favorites from 2016; and now she gives us "On + Off," a tune in the same vein. A crisp keyboard loop accompanies her unique voice as it shifts pitch effortlessly. It's a song that has a warm weather vibe and you should expect to see several remixes once "On + Off" becomes more known.
London based five-piece Swimming Tapes' new song "Cameos" is guitar-pop at its best. It opens up with a darker shoegaze sound, but then becomes this sunny seaside track that features their trademark guitar riffs. Robbie Reid and Louis Price calming vocals paint a picture of loneliness , but that gets lost in those lovely guitars. "Cameos" is off their upcoming EP Souvenirs, due out this Friday. Keep doing your thing, fellas.
