Following last summer’s announcement that the Straz Center would start helping Skipper’s Smokehouse book bigger shows, New Orleans jazz ensemble Dirty Dozen Brass Band has been confirmed for a set at the 45-year-old hangout on Skipper Rd.

The Grammy Award-winning band, which most recently performed some of the music for Walt Disney World’s new ride “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure,” celebrated 40 years since the release of its debut album My Feet Can’t Fail Me Now last year. And the record lived up to its name, because from there, there have been gigs including backing up the likes of Elvis Costello and The Black Crowes, and even closing out Jim Henson’s funeral in 1990 with a joyous “When The Saints Go Marching In” (which was meant to be cheerful, per the Muppeteer’s wishes.)

It’s been a few years since the Skipperdome has hosted any major acts, but with names like Buddy Guy, Denny Laine, and The Avett Brothers already under its belt, the Dirty Dozen are almost certainly spearheading the beginning of an epic new era for the most kaleidoscopic venue in Tampa Bay.
