In a strange twist, Henry Rollins — the toughest guy in punk rock — has postponed his Clearwater show due to weather (in fact, all his Florida appearances are off for now).
A press release from the Capitol Theatre says that the date will be rescheduled soon and that all tickets purchased will be honored. Rollins fans with questions are being asked to call the Ruth Eckerd Hall ticket office at 727-791-7400 with any of their additional inquires.
The ARW show at Ruth Eckerd Hall is still going on and the venue has confirmed that the band is already here. They were rehearsing in Orlando, after all, which you would've known if you read our interview with Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman.
Classes were cancelled at the Straz Center's Patel Conservatory, but media relations manager Alex Stewart has confirmed that tonight's Cirque de la Symphonie performance by the Florida Orchestra is definitely still happening.
Other cancellations include Wood & Wire's appearance at Bourbon, Beer and Bluegrass at the Vinoy in St. Pete. Representatives have told CL that the situation may change if the band can make it to town from Asheville, North Carolina.
Creative Loafing called around town, and most every other show is still on. Have a look at the rundown below. We'll update this "hurricane" concert listing as new information becomes available.
CANCELLED/POSTPONED
Henry Rollins An appearance from former Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins is always an abrasive experience, but things are probably going to be extra heated considering the amplified societal situation the country seems to be wading through lately. While his musical output with the Rollins band was avant-garde in the most extreme sense, the 55-year-old arrives in Clearwater to use his platform to school all of us on what’s wrong with it all and how we might start working to right it. Recent topics in his column for L.A. Weekly indlude “Bigotry is now in the open,” “Embrace your inner pussy” and “White America couldn’t handle what black America deals with every day.” If you want to get into a fight, bring your most irrational All Lives Matter friend, but don’t be surprised if an open ear at the show leads to a few somewhat productive pints at the bar afterwards. Dopapod w/Pigeons Playing Ping Pong If you close your eyes and take in “Present Ghosts” from Dopapod’s 2014 LP Never Off or Even, you might feel like you’ve been dropped into an exterrestrial jam session where E.T. is on the bass, Gizmo mans the bass and the cast of Tron is pouring the drinks while “Howard the Duck” plays on endless loop in the background. It’s freakishly future and throwback at the same, and should play out extra trippy on Friday with Baltimore electro-funk outfit Pigeons Playing Ping Pong on the undercard. The Main Squeeze w/Groove Orient/Kaleigh Baker/The Real Clash Corey Frye is a pastor right? We ask because the marathon set his band — The Main Squeeze — ran through in April was a big, sweaty funky blessing where he took fans on a journey across two proggy-jam band albums (their 2012 self-titled debut and last year’s Mind Your Head). They come back to the same room with an ridiculously talented local support bill (get there early to see The Real Clash) that will make this show as long and enjoyable as the last one. Concert In The Park Series w/Trae Pierce and the T-Stone Band St. Pete beach upgrades their concert offerings by welcoming Grammy-award winning talkbox master Trae Pierce to play a free show. The valet parking is gratis, too, so grab a blanket and someone who likes your company for a night with the seabreeze and aggressive funk blowing through your hair.
