Tampa-based musical educator and world renown tabla player Shankh Lahiri has served as the unofficial ambassador of India culture for the past few years via his nonprofit Shruti Foundation, which he uses to preserve and promote Indian classical music (and showcase it alongside other styles) via public concerts, workshops and outreach programs.

This Saturday, his foundation teams with India Cultural Center to present the 2016 Tampa Bay Indian Music & Dance Festival, a cultural celebration that features a marketplace of Indian food and goods, interactive diversions and live performances by big name India talent. The fest is divided into two sessions, with the first (11 a.m.-3:30 p.m.) touching on yoga and kirtana chanting by Val Spies and Cheryl Chaffee, vocal and sitar performances by Lavanya Dinesh and K.V. Mahabala respectively, a tabla duet featuring Pt. Nayan Ghosh and Ishaan Ghosh, and a presentation of kuchipudi dance by Madhuri Gudla. The second (4:30-8:30 p.m.) includes bharatanatyam dance by Tara Priyadarshini, vocal concerts by Sangeeta Lahiri and Radharaman Kirtan, and a solo set by renown sitar master Nayan Ghosh.

The fest takes place Sat., May 21, from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the India Cultural Center, 5511 Lynn Road, Tampa. For more info, call 813-549-9288 or visit the Shruti Foundation website. Tickets are $25 per session ($39 all-day; free ages 12 and under). Purchase tickets here. Check out Andy Warrener's video about the fest and the instruments you'll see there below…
