In a year where terrible news is the default, one local rapper gone global set about trying to create some good news for a handful of hungry fans.
Tampa rapper KB (born Kevin Burgess) gave away 30 free lunches last week to those in need.
KB has been active since 2012 and collaborated with artists like Lecrae, Andy Mineo, and For King & Country (stylized “for KING & Country”). The lyric video for his 2020 single “Armies” has been viewed over 2.2 million times.
Last Thursday morning, he asked his Twitter followers to drop their Cash App usernames so he could pay for their lunches. Through a PR rep, KB told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that he ended up sending money to 30 of them.
“In an incredibly difficult week, month, year, I just wanted to bless a few folks with something as simple as a meal,” KB said, “I felt like I needed to see some kindness and some encouragement today, and I had the power to do that for some folks. Even a small act of blessing can completely change someone’s day! I hope this might spur on more acts of kindness this week.”
Throughout this tumultuous year, KB has tried to help his community. KB is the CEO of the clothing line Native Supply, and near the beginning of the pandemic, he retrofitted his manufacturing facility in Tampa to produce both consumer-grade facemasks and FDA approved surgical masks.
He then teamed up with several Tampa charities to help get them to underserved communities.
