Thomas Wynn & the Believers w/The Groove Orient/Hannah Harber & the Lionhearts Thomas Wynn is a frequent visitor to the Bay area, but seeing the Orlando roots songwriter work through time-tested, gritty southern rock never gets old. Wynn — along with the rest of his six-piece band — is a disciple of guys like Jason Isbell, John Prine and Levon Helm, but his sound also bears the mark of even more adventurous outfits like My Morning Jacket. Throw in the harmonies provided by sister Olivia Wynn, and what you’ve got is one of Florida’s greatest family bands. (Crowbar, Ybor City) INFO
Chief Keef From mock act to a rapper with a prodigious gift for rhyme, Chief Keef has been called it all as his viral rise to fame unfolded into a career that, at times, took abrupt turns towards failure. The best version of the Chicago-native seemed to be the troubled 15-year-old kid who caught the ear of Kanye West before eventually getting signed to West’s G.O.O.D music label (which released a big remix of Keef’s hit “I Don’t Like”).
Chief Keef arrested in Miami, and his mugshot is the best ever
Unfortunately for Chief Keef, whose real name is Keith Cozart, the bad times have been more prevalent as of late. He’s been arrested numerous times, been on the receiving end of a dozen lawsuits and has been booked for two DUIs. CL covered his set at Rolling Loud in March, where Keef performed despite the fact that there was a warrant out for his arrest after he failed to appear at an arraignment. Keef’s troubled history is particularly sad when you look at his potential, which earned him a cult following in certain rap circles. More legal trouble might be the only thing that stalls his stops at Jannus in support of his 2017 mixtape Two Zero One Seven, but fans should have the fingers crossed for a chance to see the kid they call “Sosa” put on a high energy show that lives up to all the promise. The Elements Monthly Hip Hop Night w/Jimbo Shrump/Tony Coliseum /Theolodge/Von Dave/Cano J Bond/YZM/Kae B Folks definitely attending Chief Keef’s Jannus show should make a plan to end their night at Fubar where Tone Kapone hosts his monthly showcase of rising Bay area emcees. We don’t know a lt of Jimbo Shrump, who sits on top of the flyer, but free admission and Fubar’s nice beer and cocktail selection is enough to get us to entertain our curiousity. Palantine w /Expert Timing/King Complex Palantine? Yes, Palantine. The old-school Tampa indie-rock bruisers are back in the saddle. And while it’s been half a decade since the band’s last full length (the down-tuned, ultra-heavy Bruise Your Illusion, released in 2012), we’re still willing to bet that frontman Vinnie Cosentino has the boys — drummer Jeff Fox and bassist Brian David Johnson — in tip-top shape. For proof, listen to a brand new EP, Bewildered States. The three-song set of new tunes follows in the brutal footsteps of Bruise, but adds a new, almost poppy melodic touch to Palantine’s sound thanks to ear-searing songs like “Disaster” and “Last Chance.” Read more and listen here. Vans Warped Tour w/Bowling For Soup/Never Shout Never/Watsky/Beartooth/Dance Gavin Dance/Neck Deep/Hatebreed/Blessthefall/We The Kings/Carnifex/Microwave/Anti-Flag/The Ataris/Strung Out/more Let’s face it: half of you reading this probably went to one of the first Warped Tours. Shit, some of you probably even played the then-fledgling punk rock circus in its early days. Most of you probably wouldn’t recognize half the bands on the 2017 lineup either, but that’s okay because in its 23rd year, organizers of the travelling festival still manage to sneak a handful of old-school favorites (see Simi Valley skate-punks Strung Out or Pennsylvania activists Anti-Flag) in with at least one or two breaking bands we love (this year its Atlanta emo dudes Microwave). What’s more is that St. Pete’s Vinoy Park has more than enough room to accommodate the throngs of fans who hit Warped year in and year out. It takes more than an army to make the show happen, too. Have a look at some numbers about the festival here. (Vinoy Park, St. Petersburg) INFO
Memphis May Fire Charity Meet & Greet Warped Tour fans and Memphis May Fire groupies will be glad to know that their stalking of the band is for a good cause when the Texas metalcore outfit helps St. Pete nonprofit Operation Coexist raise money to help spread music education into the foster care system. Pay a cover, get to hang with the boys, eat free Pizza Box, take pictures and get shit signed for charity? Why not? (Amulet Tattoos, St. Petersburg) INFO
UNFUN Warped Tour After Party Here’s a Warped Tour after party that involves lots of booze and a few bands from the punk rock circus. Think members of Anberlin, Sleepwave, Airsickness, I Prevail, Acceptance and Automatic Loveletter playing DJ sets and definitely don’t forget to catch a ride home with someone sober at the wheel. Ganja White Night w/Boogie T While the party winds down at Warped Tour, Ybor City will be buzzing with bass as Ganja White Night rolls into town. The Belgian trio known for its explosions of bass and spacey production returns to Florida after playing Sunset Music Festival in May. Those lucky enough to attend Okeechobee Music Festival 2017 also got to see Ganja White Night earlier this year in Florida, where they played a raucous back-to-back set with Tampa Bay’s Blunts and Blondes at the fiery Incendia stage. Opening up is Nola-native Boogie T, who also appeared at Ganja White Night’s Okeechobee set. Seeing how the trio usually loves to play the big stages, this Friday’s show at the Ritz is a great opportunity to get up close to some of the top DJs in the EDM world today. Emo Nite Tampa w/Crate Bros/Kamran Mir Emo Night Tampa’s two-year anniversary party was so lit that it probably created month-long hangovers for its most faithful followers. Well, it’s time to finally shake it off as DJs Chris Wood and Theo Severson start the engine of year three by welcoming Kamran Mir back to the controls for a night of tears in your beers (no really, the bar has a special called “Tear In Your Beer” that gets you a PBR and shot).
