Heads up, the Summer of Rum fest is cancelled due to to winds. So, can gypsies do Zeppelin?
We're going to find out tonight when Bay area favorites Come Back Alice take to the Skipperdome for a tribute show that should be something different for even their most hardcore fans. That's happening today along with the opening of a new Riverside Heights record shop, reggae on the Ybor City streetcar and a free show from Wolf-Face and their pals from Gainesville and Atlanta.
To top it off there's a mosh pit olympics. Get details, listen to music, then select something to hear tonight by poking around below. See even more things to do on CL's events calendar.
Emo Night w/Crate Bros. Tampa How many times will American Football’s “I’ve Been So Lost For So Long” be played at this month’s Emo Night? “Usually we only play a song once a night, but this could get two spins,” Emo Night co-founder Theo Severson, said of the new single from the genre legends. The excitement surrounding the song’s release last week is great for fans of this monthly who apparently request American Football’s 1999 cult single “Never Meant” more than any song. Skip drinking alone at home for a night and get sad with friends this Saturday. (First Chance Last Chance, Ybor City – INFO)
CL✔️ Steelworker Records Grand Opening w/DJ Gabe/DJ Cub/DJ Evil Dead Can two independent record stores exist within one mile of each other? That experiment kicks off at 5 p.m. EDT today in Seminole/Riverside Heights with the grand opening of Steelworker Records, where owner Kenny Crum is putting over 90-percent of his own collection up for sale alongside retail titles from Tampa Bay imprints like Greyhaze, Caligari, and WOHRT Records. There are “probably about 2000 records” from Crum’s collection on the less than 900 square feet of floor space, and he’ll bring in DJs (including CL Music contributor Gabe Echazabal, who managed Crum at now-shuttered South Tampa retailer Vinyl Fever), free pizza, beer from Angry Chair Brewing, and some giveaways to celebrate the ribbon-cutting. Listen to something from WOHRT's catalog below. (Steelworker Records, Tampa – INFO)

CL✔️ Streetcar Live w/ Tribal Style Gasparilla Music Festival reactivates their rolling concert series (literally, it rolls on the tracks of the Ybor streetcar) by welcoming long-running, well-loved reggae outfit Tribal Style to the party. The brothers Tenn (Mugabe, TK, and Muti) form the core of the now Tampa-based outfit who have roots in the Long Beach backyard show scene where bands like Sublime cut their teeth. Get to Ybor before car no. 434 departs from Centennial Park Station at 5 p.m. and then ride the whole of the way to downtown Tampa or get off whenever you please. (Centennial Station, Ybor City – INFO)*Disclosure: Until his start at CL, Ray Roa was the social media director at Gasparilla Music Festival.
CL✔️ Wolf-Face w/You Vandal/Seagulls Last week, we regretfully shared that you’d have to know someone to check out Wolf-Face play a raucous house show, but today we’re happy to report that all you’ll need to see them at The Hub is a liver strong enough to have a drink or two when the lupine punk crooners play the famous downtown Tampa dive alongside Seagulls from Atlanta and Gainesville indie-punk four-piece You Vandal. Watch the wolves' new video on CL's music blog and listen to the Seagulls squaw above. (The Hub, Tampa – INFO)
Will Quinlan It’s a house show from a recent CL cover boy, Tampa songwriter Will Quinlan! A potluck starts at 5 p.m. and Quinlan will take to the cozy living room of Bay area scene champ Bob Soptei who can be contacted via goo.gl/zIbC0X. (Pasadena)
CL✔️ Come Back Alice (Led Zeppelin Tribute Set) w/Flat Land Sarasota gypsy jam band Come Back Alice gig heavily in the area, and they dip into some Zeppelin every now and then, but they’re going all out for this one where band members dutifully recreate the personas and sounds of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. Gainesville fusion outfit Flat Land celebrate a brand new album, Arrow to the Sun, in their opening slot. Preview something from that record below. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa – INFO)
CL✔️ Mosh Pit Olympics w/A Dying Light/Divine Science/The Offering/Screaming At Silence/Escape/The Cunningham Wake Have you ever looked at a mosh pit and thought “you know, that could be an athletic event,” while bodies flailed around the room? Well, now it is. Two handfuls of hardcore collectives will provide the sonic motivation for the competitors who will earn points, and win medals, for things like endurance and pit etiquette. We’re not sure if slam dancing is in on the agenda, but we’re definitely willing to show up and find out. (Local 662, St. Petersburg – INFO)
