Permanent Makeup's Christopher Nadeau is a busy guy. He plugs away at a day job like the rest of us, but the remainder of his free time is devoted to making and sharing different strains of DIY rock & roll as a member of Pinellas County-based outfits Blast & The Detergents and Permanent Makeup.
"All you need is effort," he told Creative Loafing recently when asked about the opportunities bands currently have to get their music out.
"We are in the middle of a cultural paradigm shift away from people seeing DIY bands as non-legitimate hobbies by musicians who are not good enough to make it in the music industry, to bands doing things for themselves as a respected and even preferred alternative to dealing with the mainstream."
That passion is all over Permanent Makeup's debut LP, The Void…It Creeps, which was named 2013's Best Album by CL, and the band wasted no time with a follow-up. On January 7, they released a three song 7" EP, Gibbering. The offering, limited to 300 copies, comes via New Granada Records and PM's own No Clear Records. The covers were designed and hand-screened by drummer Susan Dickson, but what's inside and within the record grooves is even better.
Gibbering's A-side — "Suggestion" — clocks in at just over four-minutes long, and is a swirling, abrasive cut that unfolds into a tumbling cascade of apocalyptic guitar scratches drenched in reverb and feedback squeal.
The band recently played a Tampa release show, and takes to the 727 tomorrow for another release show at Planet Retro in St. Petersburg. Washington D.C.'s Priests and Tampa-based Nude Tayne play support.
Donations for the touring band ($5 suggested) are being collected at the door, and the music kicks off at 7 p.m.; Planet Retro is located at 2414 Central Ave. in St. Petersburg.
