It’s a big weekend for the homegrown blues music scene, but before he celebrates a new album at a cathedral for the genre, gravel-voiced guitar slinger Selwyn Birchwood will help the “Live Music Showcase” on community radio station WMNF Tampa 88.5-FM mark a milestone of its own.

Birchwood—who releases Exorcist this week—is the guest on the program on Friday where host Ken Apperson completes his second year as host while engineer Mark Perfetti marks 17 years on the show.

You can listen to WMNF’s “Live Music Showcase” every Friday from 2 p.m.-3 p.m. via 88.5-FM or wmnf.org.

That night under the Skipperdome, the Alligator Records heavyweight brings one of his closest pals, Damon Fowler, to open the show where Birchwood will play Zappa-inspired odes to the Sunshine State (“Florida Man”) and total guitar freakouts, too (“Horns Below Her Halo”).

Tickets to see Selwyn Birchwood play Skipper’s Smokehouse in Tampa on Friday, June 9 are still available are start at $12.

And if you need more Birchwood in your life, he’s playing a free in-store performance at Daddy Kool Records in St. Petersburg on Thursday, June 8. Subscribe to Creative Loafing newsletters.
