This weekend in live music: Macy Gray, Givers, The Toasters, Lyle Lovett & more

Concerts, Oct. 18-19

Lots on tap this weekend, in addition to Don't Stop St. Pete. A breakdown below...

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18
Givers with Kind Cousin There was a period in 2010 that Givers were a regular touring staple of the Bay area. Okay, they really only played here two or three times but those were some truly memorable performances of teeth-hurting indie pop and world-beat exuberance marked by charming boy-girl harmonies. Their self-titled EP is still among my all-time favorites (and I still return to every so often) but after the quintet signed to Glassnote, they re-recorded the tracks and set them amid several others in a 2011 full-length, In Light, that just didn’t carry the same sense of wide-eyed wonder and raw magic. Still, these kids know how to throw it down in a live setting and make you want to dance, shout and cheer all at once while tugging relentlessly at your heart-strings. A must-see. (Crowbar, Ybor City)

The Amity Affliction with For The Fallen Dreams, Obey The Brave, Crossfaith, Favorite Weapon The Amity Affliction hails from Australia (Queensland to be exact) and assails with brutal metalcore that has stretched over seven lineup changes and four albums since their formation in 2003; the most recent is this summer’s Let the Ocean Take Me (Roadrunner Records) with new guitarist Dan Brown. (Orpheum, Ybor City)

Into the Cellar CD Release Show with Meatwound, 100 Car Pileup "I think over the course of five albums, Palantine started to head into heavier territory," Vinnie Cosentino told CL when we asked whether his new project featured more down-tuned guitars. "In some ways Into The Cellar is a continuation of that … but this is really a whole new band and ultimately much heavier." The duo — which also includes former Palantine, Therapeutic Chokehold and Pink Lincolns drummer Jeff Fox — play music that belongs in the belly of a beast whose home is the molten center of the earth. It finds Cosentino, 34, splitting a baritone guitar between a bass cab and guitar stack and Fox using a kit that includes a 26-inch kick drum. There are even samples of horror movies mixed into the live set, giving everything an extra demonic and demented, metal feel. Into the Cellar posted their self-titled debut on Bandcamp last week and celebrate the LP with this Halloween-themed release show. (New World Brewery, Ybor City) –Ray Roa

Macy Gray She might be smoking in “Stoned,” but Macy Gray is really crooning a love song, what she’s said is about “getting stoned because you’re in love and you need your mind to have a break when you’re all twisted up.” The soul-pop songstress still has that delicious husky-nasal tone but it’s subdued and lovely here, set against lightly picked guitar, bowed cello and easy rolling beats. Overall, an intriguing taste of what else is on The Way – her just-released LP, first album of new material since 2010, and reason she’s dropping into town on this night. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

Obituary Album Release Show with Druid Lord, Church of Disgust, Dixie Whiskey Tampa has long been a hotbed breeding ground for innumerable death metal acts but Obituary is by far the most revered and successful. This year marks three decades of producing crushing and slaying music, and the quintet releases a ninth studio album for the occasion, Inked in Blood; it’s the first to feature two new members, lead guitarist Kenny Andrews and bassist Terry Butler. Inked in Blood will be played in its entirety following Obituary’s live set on this night; official release date is October 28. (Brass Mug, Tampa)

Green Sunshine CD Release Party with Serotonic, Legacy Local funk, hop and jam rock outfit Green Sunshine returns to Blueberry Patch for a Boogie Nights-themed album release party to celebrate brand new groove-vibing album, Soular Power. The ensemble debuts tracks off the album for the first time in addition to some new covers; ‘70s-era costumes encouraged with prizes for the best ones. (Blueberry Patch, Gulfport)

Eric Andersen A singer-songwriter who emerged at the peak of the ‘60s-era Greenwich Village folk movement, Eric Andersen has produced upwards of 25 albums and tapped the talents of various peers to appear on them, from Joan Baez to Joni Mitchell, while his songs have been recorded by the likes of Johnny Cash, John Denver, Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan among others. When he was only 20, Andersen performed on the Festival Express and was briefly interviewed in the 2004film chronicling the cross-Canada train tour; his performance of “Thirsty Boots” is included in the DVD’s bonus material.(Craftsmen House Gallery, St. Petersburg)

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19
Lyle Lovett & His Acoustic Group
Country music singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett has managed to carve a niche out for himself as a non-traditionalist of the genre by maintaining a clever yet poetic and poignant lyrical style and serving up strong Texas twangy sounds as he branches out into folk, bluegrass, Western swing, jazz and even alt country territories. His acoustic group lineup comprises double bassist/vocalist Victor Krauss, cellist John Hagen, fiddle player Luke Bulla and drummer Russ Kunkel. (Mahaffey Theatre, St. Petersburg)

The Toasters with The Attack, UNRB, Soma Riot Leaders of the Third Wave ska movment The Toasters know how to get a party started and have been stoking the Brixton Beat vibes since forming in 1981. Though the lineup has shifted pretty steadily over the more than three decades the group has been active – something like 50 musicians have cycled through the ranks – and there hasn’t been any new material since 2007, The Toasters still manage to draw a healthy crowd of loyalists ready to skank it up. On this tour, they’re joined by The Attack, from Orlando, which pushes ‘70s-flavored punk rock. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
