A few noteworthy shows kick off this first week in April. Find out what's happening on this Mon., April 4 below.
Rod Picott This guy’s got two big things going for him: a case of the blues and a sense of humor about it. Released last year, his seventh album is dark Americana with nary the faintest echo of a happy lyric or major chord, and songs ranging in subject matter from a soldier who never returns home to heartbreak to a family torn apart by its own dysfunction. (Sample lyric: “It’s not that I ever stopped loving you / I just quit waiting for you to love me too.”) You won’t hear any pop ditties, but there’s a worthwhile payoff – an unobstructed view at the chambers of Rod Picott’s heart. Oh, and the real kicker? He named the album Fortune. (Jaeb Theater at Straz Center for Performing Arts, Tampa) —Leanne Castro
Atlantic Oceans Farewell Party The day has finally come: ethereal vocalist Tessa McKenna and partner/guitarist/songwriter/longtime collaborator Julian Conner (both Sleepy Viking formers) have been called north by opportunity and are absconding, leaving their Atlantic Oceans project with drummer Stephanie Anderson behind. Microgroove offers locals one last chance to see the trio perform during this farewell send-off that starts at 7 p.m. and features warm-up from Will Quinlan. Admission is free.
