YouTube Artist to Watch: Sid Sriram

The latest featured artist in the singer-songwriter series.

By appearance alone, you wouldn't imagine Sriram's vocals could have so much soul. His training began at the age of 4 with Indian classical music, and he went on to earn a degree at Berklee College of Music. He began his YouTube career about three years ago and has made a name for himself in social media with over 4 million YouTube views to date, 8,000 fans on Facebook, and 6,000 followers on Twitter. His music has been featured in The Source and GoodMusicAllDay, and has been championed by hip hop insiders like Karen Civil.

While he does have a strong connection with the hip hop community, his original material also carries elements of R&B, alt rock, Indian music and electronica. With such dynamic influences, Sriram draws on fans from all demographics, and I'm sure plenty of others will find themselves falling in love with at least one of his original songs. With a voice like his, it'd be hard not to.

Several weeks back, we kicked off a series spotlighting great music artists who use YouTube as a platform for getting their sound out there and building up a fanbase via trademark covers of relevant pop tunes. Anytime a hot new track comes out or I can't get a hook out of my head, I go straight to YouTube and find artists who've covered it. Believe it or not, you tend to discover artists who actually offer a reading that's better than the original. That's how I found out about amazing 22-year-old urban/indie singer-songwriter Sid Sriram.

Sid Sriram's high sweet voice caught my attention with his cover of Frank Ocean's "We All Try," and I immediately fell in love. I went through all his videos, almost in disbelief, sure that he couldn't be quite so talented, just waiting to find something that proved my cynicism correct. But each video was better than the last. [Video after the jump, along with more info about this intriguing artist...]
