Ayele, the executive director of I Am Choice, and Kofi, a professional organizer with Florida Consumer Action Network and Awake Pinellas, are the dynamic duo of local activism. The siblings come to it naturally: “My mom raised us to serve the community,” says Kofi. “She was always helping immigrants, teaching them to drive and how to do their taxes,” his sister adds. With their shared interests, they always have each other’s back. At Ayele’s launch for the I Am Choice campaign, which is fighting to defeat anti-abortion Amendment 6 on this fall’s ballot, Kofi was there helping every step of the way. Both smile at the memory of the first protest Kofi planned against the Afghan war: only five people showed up. And when asked their goal as activists, they answer in unison: “Organize locally and act nationally.” For more on Ayele & Kofi, click on the "Power of Twos" interview under "Related Stories" below.
