Activists against domestic violence woke up Tuesday morning to sad news about a good friend.
Revered women's advocate Linda Osmundson, former executive director of Community Action Stops Abuse (CASA), died Monday of an undisclosed illness at the age of 66.
She spent 26 years at the helm of the organization, which was once a small women's shelter, the only one of its kind in St. Pete, but grew immensely in capacity as well as reputation over the years.
"Linda Osmundson was a pioneer in her advocacy, making sure that we, as a community, never thought about domestic violence being limited to two individuals," said Gaelynn Thurman, CASA Board of Directors Vice-President, in a written statement. "Through her leadership at CASA, she educated all of us to know that domestic violence impacts children, families, employers and many of our community services and has lasting effects on the generations. CASA’s work to be done does end with the silence of her voice – this silence needs all of our voices to stand up and speak out to make sure our community and homes are a safe place."
The statement notes that Osmundson's family is requesting donations toward CASA's newest facility, a 100-bed shelter, in lieu of flowers. Make a donation to the shelter, considered to be one Osmundson's key achievements, here.
Since learning of her passing, friends of Osmundson have taken to social media to reflect on her and her impact on the community.
"Surrounded by family and friends, Linda passed away last night and entered heaven as one of God's angels (a bossy angel!) ๐ As many of you are aware, Linda possessed a strong faith and found peace in knowing she would one day join her maker," wrote Tiffany Carr, head of of the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence, in a Facebook post.
Osmundson, who retired from CASA in June, was a Christian Scientist known for her passionate advocacy in the fight against domestic violence. A former domestic violence victim herself, her 40-year career began in South Florida.
From Taking Action Against Violence's Facebook page:
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Linda Osmundson, long time Executive Director of the CASA St. Pete Domestic Violence Center. Linda was "promoted to Glory" last night after a long battle with an undisclosed illness. Her light and her love shine on in the countless number of families saved by her advocacy work spanning more than 30 years. Our team had the honor of working with Linda and getting to know her over the 8 years we produced the annual Taking Action Against Domestic Violence campaign. She leaves an indelible mark on our hearts.
It is as yet unclear whether there will be any events commemorating her life and work.
