This afternoon the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County issued a advisory for the beach, after samples taken yesterday were above the threshold for enterococci bacteria.
“The presence of enteric bacteria is an indication of fecal pollution, which may come from stormwater runoff, pets and wildlife, and human sewage,” says the advisory.
This means that swimming is not recommend, since enterococci bacteria can cause human disease, infections and rashes.
This is the second time this year the beach was closed due to high bacteria levels, after it closed last July. The beach was also closed in December of 2021 and at least two other times in 2020.
FDH says the beach will be re-sampled in a week. You can check the status of all Hillsborough County beaches via floridahealth.gov.
