A sexually charged cyborg with stilt legs trounces through the crowd at Exxxotica Ft. Lauderdale just as I start to interview Allie Haze. The cyborg proceeds to do some mechanical pelvic thrusting, grinding his codpiece on a few eager faces. Haze and I abandon our talk of sex and stare.
“I wonder who's inside it,” Haze says.
This is the real question buried beneath my scripted questions for Haze. While her exterior sex appeal catches the eye, it's the person within the porn star persona that the mind lingers on.
Haze was born in 1987 in a small town in San Bernardino County, California to parents of Dutch and Latin descent. Despite her tomboyish tendencies, she started modeling, competing in beauty pageants, and performing in theatre at a young age. In high school she began cheerleading and dating women. At 18 Haze married a preacher, but the relationship ended after two years. She trained as a vet tech and a firefighter before becoming interested in nude modeling. In 2009 Haze dove into porn at 22. She has appeared in starring roles in a number of parody porns, including Star Wars XXX and Fifty Shades of Grey, and she was recently named the January 2014, Penthouse Pet.
Is it true you got into porn because you were tired of trying to pick up girls at bars?
It’s completely true. I was a lesbian for a long time. Then when I decided to date men, I didn't wanted to lose the fun of fucking women, but it was really, really hard. Being a lesbian wasn’t popular. I know exactly how guys feel trying to pick up women at a bar.
Did you meet a lot of lipstick lesbians who were just trying to impress their boyfriends?
Right. They knew their boyfriends wanted to see them make out with a hot chick. Little did they know I wanted to fuck them. When I was done making out and was like, “Hey, do you want to go home with me?" they freaked out.
Did you ever kick a woman out of your house because she wouldn’t fuck you?
I never kicked anyone out but I would be really disappointed. It was like, “I invited you onto my couch for a reason.”
Why do you think so many porn stars are former cheerleaders? Does it have to do with the desire to perform and to be thought of as pretty by your peers?
I think it has to do with understanding how to utilize what you were born with, how to take those traits and use them to your advantage rather than using them as a crutch. You can't just sit around and think, “I’m hot so everyone should do everything for me.” You have to take charge of being a beautiful woman. Also, as a cheerleader you aim to inspire a crowd. As a porn star, you do the same thing. You inspire fans.
When you became a contract star for Vivid, both director Axel Braun and B. Skow went to Vivid's Steven Hirsch and told him to check you out. How important do you think it is to befriend your coworkers and people behind the scenes in order to get ahead in the adult industry?
Making that connection and befriending people is always beneficial. It’s long hours and you spend a lot of time together. Crazy things happen, so you have to be comfortable with one another. But, when I was offered that contract, I had literally shot for them both one time. For some reason they both individually told Steven about me, which inspired him to contact me. I wasn’t friends with either of them at the time. In that instance, I think my performance trumped everything else. I’m obviously friends with them now. B. Skow is now with Girlfriend Films and I shoot with him. Axel is now with Wicked and I shoot with him. So those friendships have carried forward.
It would seem that when a male pornographer is impressed by you in a scene, at least part of him is aroused by your performance. Do you think porn makers look for women who turn them on, or actresses who deliver a great performance, or a mix of both?
I definitely think it’s a mix of both, but I think they respect me for my performance. A lot has to do with them recognizing that I can give that performance multiple times. It will never get dull and I can always bring something new to the table.
How much of an edge do you think not being crazy helps for making a career in porn?
Crazy as in my personal life, or crazy personality, or crazy sexually? There are all kinds of crazies in our business.
Let me rephrase. What personality traits do you think are most important for a woman who wants to be successful in this industry?
I believe a sexful—I mean sex-ccessful. Wow. Let me try that again. I think a successful porn star knows when to stand up for herself in the moments that are most meaningful, but she also knows when to go with the flow. Sometimes days are long. There are things you can’t control like the environment or planes flying over. You have to keep shooting. Learning how to treat this as a business will carry you a long way. And generally the, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," rule is definitely an attitude that applies in this business.
Do you think you will always be remembered as Princess Leia from Star Wars XXX the same way Carrie Fisher never shook that role?
I think I’ve had the honor of playing multiple iconic roles. I’m also Rogue in the X-Men series. I’m Posh in the Spice Girls series. I’m Hawkgirl in Hawkman & Hawkgirl XXX. I’m also the lead in Clerks XXX. I've had plenty of opportunities to show that I can do more, so I haven’t been pigeonholed to that role, though, it is a very nice role and I wouldn’t mind being pigeonholed to it.
Have you used any of your vet tech training to perform any minor procedures on your two dogs?
Yeah. Actually one of my bulldogs ate an unknown pill. It freaked me out. I have roommates so I didn’t know what kind of capsule it was. So I gave her a hydrogen peroxide mixture to make her vomit. I’ve done other things, like picking cactus spikes out of them after a trip to the desert. They are dogs. They are curious. Things happen.
Is there anything English Bulldogs won’t eat?
My girl is a mix. She won’t eat tomatoes. But my boy bulldog will eat anything.
What have they destroyed of yours?
My male dog seems to think he can pee anywhere so I would say my carpet. They have so much personality. I owned and animal rescue when I was 18 and they are probably the most difficult breed I’ve ever dealt with. They are so headstrong and stubborn. It’s a lot of work. They need a lot of time and dedication. They are completely attached, so with my schedule, traveling a lot, it is very hard to make my boy dog feel comfortable and understand that I’m not going anywhere.
What was your highest bowling score?
Probably a 172.
Can you make the ball spin or do you just chunk it straight down the lane?
My ball is weighted and fitted to my hand, so it spins, but because it’s weighted.
