Every single hurricane season a random Florida Man emerges from his den to douse himself in the contaminated flood waters of a passing storm, as is tradition.

But please, do not do this.

This afternoon, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister took to social media to remind residents that it’s actually a terrible idea to swim in the rising storm surge of Hurricane Idalia.

“Please stay sheltered and off the roadways, and definitely stay out of the water, it’s dangerous!” wrote Chronsiter, while sharing a photo of some maniac seemingly swimming laps in a brown turd-like stream.

“Oh my god I got 16 diseases just looking at this lol. Do people not know what kind of water this is lol,” wrote one commenter.

It should go without saying, but floodwater is incredibly dangerous for several reasons, like the fact it often includes human sewage, industrial hazardous waste and physical objects such as downed trees or power lines.

At the very least, getting exposed to contaminated floodwater can often cause wounds to become infected, rashes and gastrointestinal illness, according to the Centers for Disease, Control and Prevention.

Not to mention, Tampa Bay just had five people literally die from flesh-eating bacteria this summer.

So really, stay out of the water.

As of now, quite a bit of Tampa Bay is under water. The region has experienced significant flooding, specifically along Pinellas County’s barrier islands, southern Hillsborough County’s Alafia River area, and downtown Tampa.

If you are in an emergency and facing flooding, you can contact the Tampa Police Department at (813) 231-6130 to deploy high-water rescue vehicles.
