Sun Fest II

I have certain misgivings about altering my Sunday routine. I've have already expressed these reservations, but let me stress again the difficulties in replacing my day of relaxation with an activity that wastes my valuable time. However, music usually presents a welcome exception to my wariness and this Sunday, May 30, I'm taking my chances at Sun Fest II, a music festival hosted by Gaspar's Grotto jam-packed with some of the area's finest artists.Gaspar's Grotto provides a suitable setting for a Sunday celebration. First, there's no cover, which means that for no charge you are treated to seven hours of music beginning at 3 p.m. Because the Grotto boasts both indoor and outdoor stages, the music continues nonstop throughout the day. For laymen, this means the awkward lull between bands is eliminated. Ideally, a band finishes a set, the crowd moves to the other stage and a new band begins their set. (I have been assured that there will be no overlap, which means the bands do NOT play at the same time.)

Now you're pondering the impossibility of devoting your entire day to this thing — you really only have a few hours to spare. Don't fret — you can drop by anytime throughout the day, stay as long as you want and take off when your old cranky self gets worn out. You're not obligated to show up at an exact time unless you want to see a specific band.

Speaking of bands, the line-up is as follows: The FREED (3 p.m.); Rebekah Pulley (4 p.m.); Middle Rhythm Session (5 p.m.); an acoustic open jam at 6 p.m.; COPE (7 p.m.); boon (8 p.m.); and the Rich Whiteley Band (9 p.m.). All of these artists offer different flavors and fuse diverse styles of music including blues, jazz, folk, funk, bluegrass, Americana and old-fashioned rock 'n' roll.

But I have kids, you're thinking — I still have to shell out cash for a sitter. Think again: I personally spoke with Sheri Schiller, co-owner of the venue, and she expressed great enthusiasm over the fact that families are welcome. This is an all-ages show.

So come out and treat yourself to an eclectic mix of smooth and groovin' tunes that will compel you to dance whether you like it or not. Gaspar's Grotto, 1805 E. Seventh Ave., Ybor City. 813-248-5900.
