In times of despair, people come together to achieve great things and today was no exception at the 19th Annual Black Heritage Celebration.
At Joe Chillura Courthouse Square in downtown Tampa, county officials came out to present the 2011 Legacy Award to Spencer Albert and to honor black-owned businesses that have stood the test of time during segregation.
Hillsborough County commissioners have declared February 11 as Black Heritage Celebration Day. Commissioner, Al Higginbotham, recognized it as a day to honor the success of black Americans and to commend the efforts of the Black Heritage Celebration Committee and others who have worked so hard to preserve it.
In attendance were the countys five oldest black-owned businesses: Helping Hand Day Nursery, The Florida Sentinel Bulletin, Coles Barber Shop, Wilsons Funeral Home and College Hill Pharmacy.
The commissioners recognized the black businesses in Tampa and presented awards to the families who play a role in their continued growth.
Commissioner Sandra Murman reflects on the days of segregation where many front doors were closed for people of color but College Hill Pharmacys door was always open, she said. It was a family-friendly place where everyone could expect professional pharmacy services and knew their patronage was expected and appreciated.
The Legacy Award recognizes retired employees who have made a significant difference in the community. County Administrator, Mike Merrill presented the award to Spencer Albert, retired Hillsborough County Executive Manager of minority/women and small business programs.
Hes a pioneer for the black business community and according to the Black Heritage Celebration Committee he is someone who is always seeking new, innovative and effective methods by which to further businesses and has helped determine the needs of the business community and offered ways in which to meet those needs.
Together with the city of Tampa and great community leaders, small businesses will grow and continue to succeed in the future.
