Auction News

Re: "Scene & Herd: Going Once, Going Twice…" by Scott Harrell (Feb. 23-Mar. 1) Awesome article! We really appreciate it… even the honesty on the slow start. Your take on people's perspective and how they think of auctions, was right on! I hope in time everyone gets the fact that our events aren't pretentious or snobby. Chad and I always say "Pop Art For Everyone." This is at the very heart of what The Artillery is. Something for everyone… An all-inclusive vibe! I love it! Thank you so much!!

No Dummy

Re: "Letters: God Smack," by Travis May (Feb. 23-Mar. 1) I would like to respond to Travis May's letter in which he childishly called a preacher a moron. Mr. May, there are many of us who are Christians who also consider ourselves on your intellectual level (or perhaps beyond). As the "Krunk for Christ" article makes clear, we express ourselves in many ways, and we have that right. Obviously you have the equal right to proceed on a secular path, but please do not suggest that papers such as the Planet (hardly a bastion for religiosity) should deny our existence. Also, my friend, you might in the future abstain from the vacuous practice of insulting those who disagree with you (i.e. calling them a 'moron.') Thank you and God bless. May the forces of history propel you to a favored destination.

Thanks For Caring

Re: "A Daughter Who Deserves Choices," by John Sugg (Feb. 16-22) Bravo! Bravo! On behalf of your children and the thousands of children deemed "difficult to adopt" because they are not infants or white or always healthy or have brothers and sisters, bravo! You have said what I've been telling people for years. When I see someone pumping gas next to a bumper sticker on their van that says "Adoption Not Abortion," I exclaim "Oh, how many special-needs kids have you adopted?" They (picture white man, late 30s) glare at me and hop in their van with their biological children in the back and drive off. As a social worker with many years of Child Protective Services experience; as a therapist working with wounded kids; as the biological daughter of parents who were foster parents for almost 30 years – with six kids of their own, and both working full time; as the chosen sister to now-adult women who had to select their own families as they left behind their mangled childhoods; and as a person who understands that all is not Ballantyne-and-tennis, I thank you.

Hoppin' The Pond

Re: "Scene & Herd: Hoppin' John Who?" by Scott Harrell (Jan. 5-11) As is usual on my trips to Florida, I pick up a copy of all the latest papers and local magazines (including the Weekly Planet) to read when I get back to England. Finally, this week I got around to the WP from early January, and your article Hoppin' John Who? You know those lists of random things you have a mental note of to look up on the Internet, but never get around to doing? Well Hoppin' John was one of those things for me. The dish is unheard of in England and yet I knew of it from the party scene in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof when Big Daddy comes back into town! Thanks for a great article. You have prompted me to have a go at making HJ for myself. From scratch of course! I shall skip the "can of assorted crap."

Correction The cover story "Krunk for Christ" (Feb. 16-23) correctly reported that Willie Green had not attended church in over a month, but failed to give a reason for his absence, leading the reader to believe that he simply didn't want to be there. In fact, he had to work on those Sundays that he missed.
